Jonah Kumalae Gold Award ukuleles are classic pieces of Hawaiian music history, crafted by one of the pioneers of the instrument. Typically found in soprano size, these instruments were designed to commemorate the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition (P.P.I.E.)

  • Body, Neck, and Fretboard: Genuine Hawaiian Koa wood. Kumalae ukuleles are renowned for utilizing premium Koa, often featuring beautiful, figured grain patterns.
  • Tuning Pegs: These were traditionally made using dark, dense Ohia wood.
  • Binding/Purfling: Kumalae ukuleles commonly featured inlaid "rope" or striped wood purfling/binding.
  • Original Corderoy black felt lining in the case- all original hardware.
  • The slight damage to the back is repaired well, and some say it adds “a vintage sound” and can be characterized as a “patina”. It was made over 110 years ago, so it’s in pretty amazing shape.
