dbx 161 VU Compressor/Limiter - Single #4895 (Vintage)Fully cleaned, recapped and calibrated. This unit includes ears for 19-inch racking.
The dbx 161 VU compressor is virtually identical to the more expensive 160 VU, but with an unbalanced input/output. However, those that use it realize that it sounds nearly identical, and you don't need a balanced output for most applications. The 161 VU is an extremely versatile unit that many engineers feel to be one of the best bass-kick-snare compressors on the planet, and it's surprisingly good on vocals. The 161 is a Voltage Controlled Amplifier compressor that uses a transformerless, solid-state design that has endured for decades. The program-dependent compression, combined with multiple gain stage components, creates a sound that is uniquely its own.
THE ORIGINAL VCA COMPRESSORDerived from the pioneering dbx 202 Voltage-Controlled Amplifier (VCA), the dbx 160/161/161 was the first compressor to utilize VCA technology. Similar in principle to a variable-mu tube, the VCA in the detector circuit offered more refined control over the attack, release, threshold, and knee parameters—at a fraction of the cost. Capable of everything from smooth leveling to peak limiting and aggressive “pumping” effects, the dbx 160/161's sonic versatility and low price made it an instant favorite among recording and mixing engineers.
AN ENDURING STUDIO CLASSICSince its introduction, the dbx 160/161 has been an inspiration for a number of products. The 160/161 features a sound that differs from previous compressors with hard knee compression characteristics and program dependencies distinct from the LA-2A or 1176. Its solid-state, transformerless design brought forth a new era in audio technology. Amazing on kick, snare, bass guitars, with just the right attack/release. Just tap the kick/snare with it before going to ProTools, to get some tape compression feel. Might be the best bass comp on the planet, and it's surprisingly good on vocals.
EXPERT SERVICINGThe dbx 160/161 VU compressor is a perennial favorite among recording engineers for its classic soft knee/smooth compression sound and ease of operation. First introduced in 1976, many of these units are still around, but due to their age they usually need some work done to make them sound their best. At Vintage King, our technicians are expert at the repair and restoration of these compressors. Unlike a unit that you might be tempted to buy from an auction site, our 160/161 VUs have been thoroughly cleaned, repaired and tested by a professional technician.
