Up for sale is this vintage 1967 Gibson Melody Maker XII 12-string electric guitar. An extremely rare variation on the already sought-after SG-body Melody Maker line, this one made our jaws drop when we first laid eyes on it...
This instrument is all original an in very nice condition for its age. The original Sparkling Burgundy finish is unfaded, beautiful, and bright and it's very clear that this instrument didn't see much light over the years. There are a few minor scuffs and scratches but, overall, it's probably one of the nicest examples out there of the estimated production of 210 instruments. The instrument does have an area of cable burn on the back of the body (horn, pictured) and on the back of the neck (pictured). The area on the back of the neck can be felt while playing, but we didn't find it troublesome at all. The original chrome hardware is clean as well, showing only minor pitting. The original white plastic is all intact but does show some light discoloration. The guitar was marked as a factory second and "BGN" on the back of the headstock and we can only imagine it is because of a small circular spot on the back of the body under the finish (pictured).
Our tech has just gone over this one and cleaned it up, polished the frets, oiled the fretboard, installed a fresh set of strings, set it up, and sprayed out the electronics. Everything works as it should but he did note that the pickup selector switch is scratchy as is typical on these. The neck is straight, the truss rod is functional, and the original frets show only light wear. It plays with very low, comfortable action all the way up the neck. He did note that the tailpiece was originally installed just a touch off (pictured) but this leads to no issues and we just like to be transparent about such things.
A non-original and very loose-fitting hardshell case is included mainly to protect the guitar in shipping. The instrument will be well-packed inside and out to ensure safe shipping although it wouldn't break our hearts if this one was picked up or delivered in-person because of what it is.
This is an extremely nice, great playing example of a very cool model. I have no doubt that we will regret selling this one on down the line. My loss is your gain! While, yes, you can find an example for a little less money, it's not going to be nearly as nice and especially unfaded so don't miss out on this one...
