Hiwatt DR103 Vertical Combo

This limited-run Custom 100 212V is based on the mid-2000s combo amps built for Noel Gallagher, an evolution of the flagship 100-watt DR circuit with a few thoughtful additions. Both channels feature bypassable mods, and the pair of UK-built Fane Purpleback 12" speakers, mounted vertically, give the amp a broad, immediate response that stays composed even at stage volumes.

Set clean, the amp has a direct, uncompressed feel that takes pedals well. The open-back cabinet projects widely, making it easy to hear yourself in a band mix. Push the channels, and it moves into an overdrive that stays reactive to your touch—thick enough for single-note lines, controlled enough for rhythm work.

This edition adds a push-pull switch on each channel’s volume control, widening the bandwidth and gain range for more low-end weight and additional drive textures. As with all DR-series amps, the channels can be blended with a jumper for further shaping.

The vertical 2x12 format isn’t just cosmetic; lifting the speakers higher improves onstage monitoring and puts the controls at a natural reach. The UK-made Purplebacks handle 150 watts each and bring a familiar mix of articulate highs, forward mids, and a rounded vintage low end. Construction follows the same standards as the rest of the Custom lineup: 18mm birch ply, solid bracing, and a chassis designed to stay quiet and stable at high output. Top and side handles make transport straightforward.

In short? This is a loud, responsive, and thoughtfully engineered take on the iconic DR circuit, built for players who need clarity, punch, and real-world utility at serious volume.
