The Pioneer RT-2022 is a vintage, semi-professional semi-modular reel-to-reel tape recorder introduced by Pioneer in late 1976. It stands as one of the largest, heaviest, and most expensive open-reel tape decks Pioneer ever manufactured, highly regarded by audiophiles for its tank-like build quality and superior audio reproduction.
System Design & Architecture
- Two-Unit Modular Layout: Consists of the RTU-11 tape transport mechanism and the TAU-11 recording/playback pre-amplifier unit.
- Channel Configuration: Operates standardly as a 2-track, 2-channel stereo master deck.
- Expandability: The head assemblies are interchangeable. By pairing the transport with two TAU-11 pre-amplifiers and a 4-channel head block, the system transforms into a 4-track quadraphonic deck known as the RT-2044.
Core Technical Specifications
- Tape Speeds: Supports professional tracking speeds of 7½ ips (19 cm/s) and 15 ips (38 cm/s).
- Reel Compatibility: Built specifically to accommodate large 10½-inch reels as well as standard smaller sizes.
- Motor Drive: Employs a robust 3-motor drive system to ensure precise tape tension and minimal wow and flutter.
- Equalization Standards: Offers selectable NAB and IEC EQ settings, making it highly compatible with modern high-end boutique master tape dubs. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Physical Dimension & Presence
- Weight: Heavyweight design coming in at over 62 pounds (approx. 28 kg).
- Dimensions: Measures 18¼" Wide × 21¾" High × 10¾" Deep
