The 1968 Gibson Melody Maker D is a dual-pickup, ultra-thin solid-body electric guitar. Featuring a contoured SG-style double-cutaway mahogany body, a 24.75" scale neck, and two single-coil pickups, it offered an accessible, versatile, and lightweight design for players.

Body Wood: Mahogany

Neck Wood: Mahogany

Fretboard: Rosewood with acrylic dot inlays.

Frets: 22 frets.

Scale Length: 24.75 inches.

Nut Width: Typically 1-9/16"

Neck Joint: Set-neck.

Pickups: Two single-coil pickups.

Controls: Two Volume pots, two Tone pots, and an upper-bout 3-position slider switch for pickup selection.

Pots: CTS potentiometers.

Bridge: Compensated wraparound tailpiece/bridge unit.

Vibrato: Came standard or as an optional upgrade with the short Maestro Vibrola.

Tuners: Kluson 3-on-a-plate tuners with white plastic oval buttons.

Knobs: Black "Witch Hat" knobs.

Pickguard: Single-ply white

Finishes: Standard options for 1968 included Sunburst, Walnut, Sparkling Burgundy, and occasionally Pelham Blue.

This example has (obviously) gone through some changes. The neck joint and headstock overlay are repaired, and the entire instrument was oversprayed with clear nitro - pro work. Tuners are changed to vintage nickel Grovers (likely the reason for the overlay repair). Control knobs have also been changed but look to be vintage Gibson. Slider switch has been replaced with a Switchcraft 3-way, and the original pickups were swapped out for a pair of Gibson patent sticker humbuckers (7.57k bridge, 7.94k neck). The pickup covers don't look like they've ever been removed, but the leads are spliced and the mounting tabs have been cut off and stuck under the ends of the covers (we assume to avoid deepening the body routing). Some of the work under the hood looks rough, but it's fully functional. Neck carve is typical of the period and measures 1.562" wide at the nut. Frets and fingerboard have some visible wear, but the guitar sets up with low, buzz-free action. It's a great playing and sounding late-sixties SG-style guitar that won't break the bank! Weighs 7.94 pounds and ships in period correct HSC shown.
