Unfamiliar with the MKSREC1? You're forgiven.
Unless you're really into the SP-1200 or a "head" in the music gear scene, it's very likely you missed this one. Why? It's the byproduct of one mans labor over––shoot, 5+ years I'd guess to recreate the OG SP-1200 as exact as possible but with the removal of all the limitations that make working on the vintage units a bummer/headache (including the new Rossum 1200 which has most of the shortcomings of it's predecessors), and bring the SP-1200 sound and workflow––authentically into the future.
These units are hand built by the designer one at a time. As you can imagine, there's an extensive lead time as a result. If you head to the MKSREC website you'll note there are never any in stock ready to go.
I've probably owned 15-20 SP-12/1200s throughout the course of my music career. I was one of the earliest adopters of the Isla S2400, and was one of the first to get my hands on the Rossum 1200. As such, I'm qualified to make matter-of-fact statements on what this machine is or isn't relative to it's predecessors.
What I can tell you is that this is the very best SP-1200 on the market. Full stop. The designer achieved something monumental with this machine. It retains the feel (I'm talking right now about the physical UI feel here) and spirit of the vintage 1200s, while taking very tasteful liberties to make it superior (thick aluminum sides, textured faceplate, etc). The sliders move like butter, and the buttons are nice and "clacky" and springy (as good or better than the OGs). The LED is laser sharp, and the knurled control knobs at the top for controlling the SSI (SSM) filters, volume, metronome, etc feel nice.
More important of course is the sound and function. I'd be here all day explaining all the fire things he added to the OS while maintaining exactly the same flow and menu system of the 1200 (it's truly incredible), but some highlights to me are:
-SD card reader standard w/ a proper modern folder system (you can drop an entire folder of samples from your computer on to the SD, wav files etc, and then load them in the SP like you do a modern MPC. You can also resample the entire folder through the converters and "SP-fi" all the samples instead of having to process them one by one as well.),
-Full control of the SSI (modern SSM) analog filters with resonance (much better than the tiny little sliders on the back of the Rossum or JazzCat upgrade cards).
-ADHSR envelopes, track/global mutes (so clutch!), built in overdrive (make the SP hit even harder, NASTY!), built compressor *with* sidechain for ducking, separate tuning/decay, you can change swing settings while the sequencer runs, you can select double-time swing behavior without having to double the BPM directly, clock I/O for syncing your SH-101, TB-303, or JX-3P sequencer to the tempo, and the list goes on.
How does it sound? Exactly like the black face 1200s from the 1990s. Warts and all. It's noisier than the Rossum just like the vintage units. It's not kinda like, almost like, 5% different, not even 1% different. It's exactly the same. Trust me.
To wrap this description up... this is the 1200 I and many like me dreamed about for 20 years. Someone finally pulled it off. It's the pinnacle and better than all others, including the original. There's zero reason to own a vintage 1200 when this exists. ZERO. Remember what I said earlier, I've owned 15-20 vintage 1200s in my life. And every clone that's come along I've acquired. I am well off enough that I could buy a vintage 1200 if I truly felt it was the better machine. The MKSREC is a future classic and the ultimate 12-bit sampler drum machine in 2026. There's no competition if that specific niche is important to you.
It comes installed with a very recent beta OS that the designer sent me. I'm not sure how many others have it or aware of it (even other MKSREC owners). Includes original box, proprietary power supply, SD card.
