Vintage 1977 Hiwatt DR504 Custom 50 Tube Amp Head (Hylight Era)
Used, excellent condition. Includes the head amp and AC power cord.
This is an opportunity to own a true classic! This clean 1977 Hiwatt Custom 50 DR504 is one of the original all-tube 50-watt Hiwatt heads that preceded the reissues of the 1990s. It is from the Hylight Electronics era (S/N 11016), and manufactured in the UK. This unit was purchased in August 2022. The previous owner had it serviced and re-tubed by Andy Marshall of THD Electronics and also had him modify the circuit to sonically match another vintage 1970 DR504 that the customer owned "that he thought was the best-sounding he had ever encountered." The EL34 tubes and electrolytic capacitors are new. It has been in a private home studio ever since. Note that main screw attaching the carrying handle to the case on one end is loose and needs retightening. The screw is held by a t-nut on the inside of the case (see next to last photo). Tightening requires removing the handle cap to get at the screw head, which I didn't feel like messing with.
Please refer to the photos below to see the current condition of the exterior and interior components. The buyer can choose to have the large EL34 tubes removed and separately wrapped for shipment, if desired, but they seem to be pretty securely retained and is not likely necessary.
Here is the listing description from which I purchased it:
Up for sale, a 1977 Hiwatt Custom 50 DR504 head in exceptional condition and in perfect working order. This very original head was freshly serviced by Andy Marshall at THD, with a recapped power supply and full retube with JJ EL34s. The head delivers thick crunch and pummeling low end grind. Extremely powerful, efficient and searing, this Hiwatt can achieve saturated roar and robust cleans, as commanding and bass-rich as any vintage British tube amp with an incredibly dynamic, touch-sensitive responsiveness.
The amp features a four input, two-channel circuit (Normal and Bright). Each channel has its own dedicated Volume knob, with a global three-band EQ and Presence knob, followed by a Master Volume ensuring overdrive and grind at desired volumes. Essentially a 50 watt version of the venerable DR103, this amp has the headroom and muscle indicative of the early Hiwatt sound.
The circuit is very original and freshly serviced, with stock Partridge transformers. The preamp retains a bevy of original mustard caps, and the power supply has been fully recapped. The majority of the original pots are intact, with two modern replacements.
The original Hylight-era Hiwatt badge is intact with a serial number dating to 1977. The tubes include a properly biased pair of JJ EL34 power tubes, with all JJ-made valves in the preamp as well. All hardware is original, and all stock plastics are accounted for, with a full complement of black chicken head knobs and a large Hiwatt badge. Save for some oxidation on the chassis, the amp is remarkably well-kept with extremely clean black tolex framed by white piping.
