Its appearance notwithstanding, this East/Central African kettle drum is functional. That is, the drum head has three small slits, and much of the lacing securing the drum head to the hide at the base is worn. Even so, the drum is functional. For its part, the 3-legged stand, carved from a single piece of hardwood, has a small chip in the top; otherwise, it is in good condition.
Note: When I acquired this piece, I considered replacing the hide, which appears to be antelope, with either thick goatskin or cowhide. I decided against making repairs, however, because the drum's flaws add to its character, and it is playable with either hands or mallets.
Drum dimensions: 21 1/2" diameter x 9" high
Stand dimensions: 14 3/4" diameter x 14" high
