The "AM" designation stands for Amber Flame Maple, highlighting its striking tiger-flame wood grain finished in a rich, vibrant amber stain. It serves as a modern tribute to the legendary 1950s Gretsch 6120 popularized by Chet Atkins and rockabilly pioneer Brian Setzer.

The instrument is highly regarded by guitarists for its structural configuration, traditional electronics layout, and high-quality materials:
- Body Construction: Full 16-inch wide, single-cutaway hollow body featuring an arched laminated flame maple top with matching laminated flame maple back and sides. It features oversized bound F-holes for optimal acoustic projection.
- Neck & Fretboard: Comfy, slim 3-piece rock maple neck paired with a premium 12-inch radius ebony fingerboard, 22 frets, and classic Neo-Classic "thumbnail" pearloid position markers.

The Classic 3-Position Tone SwitchRather than a traditional tone knob, the Gretsch G6120AM relies on the historical 3-position master tone toggle switch layout preferred by Chet Atkins
- Center Position: Pickups are "wide open" with no high-frequency roll-off, yielding the brightest, most articulate sound.
- Down Position: Mellows out the high frequencies slightly (similar to a standard tone pot rolled to 9), providing a warmer lead voice.
- Up Position: Darkens the tone significantly (similar to a standard tone pot rolled down to 6), making it excellent for traditional jazz and comping.
The electronics are completed by a master volume knob on the lower bout alongside dedicated independent volume controls for both the neck and bridge pickups
