6lbs 14oz

Very good condition, especially for its age. Coming up on a century old! Plays great and is deceptively loud. Bridge and tuning keys have been replaced. Originals tuners are included. Several scratches on resonator,. Some worn finish on neck. See all pics. Includes case.

The 1927 Gibson TB-1 Tenor Banjo is a vintage instrument from Gibson’s ā€œGolden Yearsā€ (1918–1938), representing the entry-level model in their tenor banjo lineup.  Unlike the higher-end Mastertone models (e.g., TB-3, TB-4, Granada), the TB-1 is a non-Mastertone instrument, meaning it lacks a true tone ring and instead features a simple small-diameter brass hoop atop the rim.

The 1927 TB-1 typically features:

  • Rim: Solid maple with no tone ring; uses a brass hoop for tension.

  • Flange: Often includes diamond-shaped openings (characteristic of early TB-1s).

  • Hardware: Nickel-plated; bracket-shoe construction.

  • Woods: Dark-stained maple neck and resonator; ebony or rosewood fingerboard with simple dot or ā€œfleur-de-lisā€ inlays.

  • Peghead: Fiddle-shaped with silkscreened ā€œThe Gibsonā€ logo; lacks the ornate inlays of Mastertone models.

  • Scale Length: Approximately 19–21 inches, suitable for Irish tuning or traditional tenor (C-G-D-A).

Introduced during a period when Gibson was expanding its banjo line, the TB-1 was marketed as an affordable yet professional-quality instrument. While it lacked the sonic complexity of Mastertone models with ball-bearing tone chambers, its sturdy construction and clear tone made it popular among dance bands, soloists, and home players. The 1927 catalog also highlights its suitability for ā€œRadio and Recording, The School Orchestra, Dance and Concert, The Soloist, The Home.ā€
