Vintage DiMarzio Dual Sound Humbucker – Super Distortion DNA - late 1970s / early 1980s.

The Dual Sound sits directly in the same bloodline as the legendary DiMarzio Super Distortion: hot output, ceramic punch, thick mids, big lows, and the kind of aggressive response that helped define modified rock guitars in the 1970s and early 1980s.

The difference is the wiring. While the classic Super Distortion became famous as a straight-ahead high-output humbucker, the Dual Sound was the more flexible version, allowing additional wiring options such as series/parallel or split-style configurations depending on the setup. In simple terms: Super Distortion attitude, with more wiring possibilities.

This pickup is fully functional and sounds exactly like it should: loud, direct, rude, and unapologetically old-school. It is not a museum piece. It has visible road wear, marks, aging, and the kind of cosmetic history you only get from a real vintage part that has actually lived inside a guitar.

The Super Distortion / Dual Sound family is strongly tied to the golden age of guitar modification, associated with players such as Ace Frehley, Al Di Meola, Tom Scholz, Phil Collen, and Paul Gilbert. Al Di Meola’s early DiMarzio-equipped Les Paul setup is especially relevant here, with DiMarzio’s own history mentioning a Super Distortion in the bridge and a Dual Sound in the neck.
