1978 Gibson Byrdland – Now in Stock

The Gibson Byrdland, one of Gibson’s most celebrated thin-body hollow-body guitars, has been favored by top artists around the world for decades. Its short-scale neck and uniquely warm, sweet tonal character are truly captivating.

The top is crafted from beautifully tight-grained spruce, while the sides and back feature attractive maple with a naturally understated yet eye-catching appearance. The neck is made from figured maple with striking flame figuring and walnut center laminations. Premium pearl fingerboard inlays, the engraved “BYRDLAND” tailpiece, and other upscale appointments showcase the elegance and luxury expected from a top-tier model.

Tonally, this Byrdland is equipped with a pair of stamped-number humbuckers, delivering an overall warm, smooth, and rich voice. The neck pickup produces full-bodied lows and singing mids, allowing both single notes and chords to ring out with exceptional sweetness. The bridge pickup offers enhanced clarity and articulation with a slightly brighter character, providing excellent note separation while maintaining balance and cohesion when playing chords.

In terms of playability, despite its large 17-inch body size, the Byrdland’s slim body depth of approximately 57mm fits comfortably against the player and minimizes fatigue during long playing sessions. The nut width measures approximately 42mm, and the neck features a comfortable rounded profile that feels natural in the hand.

Considering its age, the guitar remains in remarkably clean condition. While there are no major signs of damage, it exhibits desirable vintage characteristics such as aged body binding and tasteful weather checking throughout, giving it the classic, refined appearance associated with vintage Gibson instruments. The neck is in excellent shape and the frets show minimal wear, ensuring solid playability. The rear pickup’s tone pot cover has been removed. The pickguard has been replaced. Some rust is visible on the edge of the neck pickup cover.

The original Gibson hard case shown in the photos is included.
