Amber Series 70 Project Amp
I originally picked this Amber Series 70 up with the idea of using it to build a pair of Monoblocks. I’ve got too many things on my plate right now, though, and I decided to pass the project on.
It was a bit of a story getting it. I bought it, got it home, and discovered it was a "Frankenstein" job. It had been modified internally and was missing one driver board. The sellers agreed it wasn't as described and didn't want to mess with return shipping, so they just let me keep it.
I did a quick bench test to see what was salvageable. I put in fresh fuses and managed to get clean music through one channel. This is good news, as it verifies that both transformers are healthy and that the one remaining driver board actually works. I powered it down right away to preserve everything.
What to do with it (The Options):
You have two good paths with this thing.
1. Fix it up. Even though I'm selling this as-is, it’s not really that daunting of a restore. There is a prominent guy on eBay who bought up all the NOS parts from the factory and is selling original driver boards for about $100. He actually reached out to me. For another $100 and a bit of bench time, you could have a fully functional, highly regarded Series 70.
2. Part it out. If you've got the time to do it, the parts value here is double the asking price. Based on recent eBay prices, you could get:
- Transformers (Working pair): $150 - $180
- Verified Driver Board: $85 - $100
- Chassis and Faceplate (Great cosmetics): $65 - $80
- Filter caps, heatsinks, and hardware: $50 - $70 That’s $350 to $430 in parts.
You’re basically buying the transformers and getting a free driver board, chassis, and faceplate. It's great for an easy restoration project or as a donor for your current gear.
Condition Summary: As mentioned, it's missing one driver board and is modified internally. One channel tested good. Strict as-is sale. The cosmetic condition is actually very good, which makes it a great donor for a restoration.
Logistics: It’s heavy iron. Don't worry, I know how to pack this stuff. It will be triple-wrapped, double-boxed, and braced internally.
