1985 Gibson Les Paul Double Cut XPL-400 in Pewter Metallic / Charcoal Grey
For your consideration is a cool rare Gibson guitar with tons of mojo. There are various honest dings or blemishes as one would expect with a mid-1980's guitar that's been played. The guitar is in good overall condition and has not been abused. There are no breaks, cracks or major repairs. I tried to capture the most pronounced items in the listing pics and video. Specific items of note include but are not limited to the following.
- There are vertical finish checking lines throughout the guitar, particularly on the front of the guitar as well as the back of the headstock (see video).
- There is some sort of finish blemish on the right side of the front of the body. (see pics)
- There is a very minor ding on the back of the neck that can be felt with your finger but I have never felt it while playing the guitar. (see pics)
- There is some chipping around the tuners which has been filled in with a black marker to diminish the visibility. (see pics)
- There is some wear on the pickup rings (particular the middle pickup)
The finish has yellowed over a little giving the original and rare pewter metallic finish a super cool slightly green hue. To my eye, the finish is a little more green than some of the listing pics indicate on my computer monitor. It plays and sounds great and offers reasonably low action. Frets show normal wear and have plenty of life remaining. The neck feels like a slim C to me, typical of 80's Gibsons. The factory installed Gibson-branded Kahler is fully functional and the guitar comes with the original associated arm. The truss rod and all electronics function properly. In 2022, this guitar was previously sold through Gruhn's in Nashville (screenshot of listing available upon request).
To the best of my knowledge, the guitar is completely original with the exception of the pickup mounting screws and Kahler adjustment screws. Both sets of screws were rusted and replaced with appropriate reproduction pieces during routine maintenance. In addition, one of the pickup mounting screws (center pickup, bottom right) broke off (see pics). This screw was professionally extracted and the hole was re-plugged and colored black to reduce contrast and visibility. You can barely see the very edge of the plug poking out from under the pickup ring, but you likely would not notice it unless you knew it was there.
I feel confident that the pickups are original to the guitar. However, I have not seen these pickups on other XPL-400's. I am speculating that these may be an early Bill Lawrence design similar to pickups I have seen on some other Gibson super-strat style guitars.
The guitar is being sold with an era-correct Gibson Chainsaw case. The case's 3 latches work properly, although one latch had a minor repair (see pics and video). The guitar fits in the case very well; however, because of the explorer headstock, the neck rests ever so slightly off center (see video and pic). That said, the guitar is perfectly safe and very well protected in the chainsaw case.
