HISTORY:
Introduced in 1954, the Fender Stratocaster revolutionized electric guitars with its contoured ash body, groundbreaking 3-pickup design, and innovative synchronized tremolo system. Designed for comfort and versatility by Leo Fender, Freddy Tavares, and Rex Gallion, it became an iconic staple for rock, blues, and country players.
Key Historical Evolution
- 1954: The Stratocaster debuted with a 2-color sunburst finish, a single-piece maple neck, and a "comfort contour body".
- Mid-1950s: Alder became the standard wood for body production (replacing ash, except for blonde finishes) in 1956.
- 1957: The "V-shaped" neck profile and ABS plastic parts became standard.
- 1960s: The iconic 3-ply pickguard and rosewood fretboards were introduced.
- 1965: CBS purchased Fender, initiating changes like the larger headstock and a shift from a 3-way to a 5-way pickup selector switch in later years. YouTube +4
Iconic Features & Players
- Design: Known for its double-cutaway design, which allowed easier access to higher frets.
- Innovations: The "original contour body" and the tremolo system provided superior comfort and sonic variety compared to the Telecaster.
- Players: The instrument was immortalized by players like Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, David Gilmour, and Stevie Ray Vaughan.
- Significant Sales: Early 1954 models can fetch over $250,000, while celebrity-owned guitars, such as David Gilmour's "Black Strat" and Eric Clapton's, have sold for nearly $1 million.
Design & Specifications
By 1977, the Stratocaster had undergone several major structural changes from its original 1954 design to accommodate faster manufacturing and modern playing styles.
- Body & Finish: Most Natural finish models featured a solid ash body to showcase the wood grain, often resulting in heavy guitars weighing between 9 and 10 pounds.
- Neck Construction: It used the 3-bolt "Micro-Tilt" neck plate, which allowed for easier adjustment of the neck angle compared to older 4-bolt designs.
- Headstock: The iconic large "CBS-style" headstock was standard, featuring a "bullet" truss rod adjuster at the nut and dual wing-style string trees.
- Electronics: 1977 was the first year the 5-way pickup selector became standard equipment, officially replacing the 3-way switch that players had previously modified themselves to get "in-between" tones.
- Hardware: Standard models included a 6-screw synchronized tremolo with die-cast saddles, while less common "hardtail" versions used a fixed bridge with through-body stringing.
