The unique construction of the Shure KSM 313 ribbon mic offers two distinct sounds (front/back) and is designed for high sound pressure levels, also on a live stage. Rumor has it that Slash himself uses it to mic his amps on stage. Be that as it may, I’ve only used it in a non-smoking studio, which is why it’s in like-new condition. But I can confirm that the KSM 313 can handle super loud volumes.

In any case, this thing sounds great—on one side, a slight roll-off in the highs; on the other, a boost in the highs. In other words, with guitar amps, you can either get a slightly darker, fatter sound or a brighter one with more presence. Combined with an SM 57, you can record some really awesome guitar sounds.

You can also sing through it—it adds a slight coloration, but the result is great.
