DETAILED DESCRIPTION — DON YOUNG CUSTOM DOBRO (ONE‑OF‑ONE OCTAVE MANDOLIN)

Maker: Don Young (pre–National Reso‑Phonic) Type: Custom resonator octave mandolin (one‑of‑one) Year of Construction: Early 1970s (approx. 1972–1974) Location of Build: Los Angeles, California (Dobro shop era) Provenance: Original owner Bob Liepman commissioned directly from Don Young.

Overview

This is a unique, hand‑built resonator octave mandolin constructed by Don Young during his early Dobro period, prior to co‑founding National Reso‑Phonic Guitars. It is believed to be the only instrument of its kind—a Dobro‑style, single‑cone resonator built specifically as an octave mandolin rather than a conversion or later modification.

The instrument represents an extremely early example of Young’s independent resonator work and predates the modern National revival by more than a decade. It is both a functional performance instrument and a historically significant artifact from one of the most important figures in modern resonator history.

Bob played with the Venice Canaligators at the time.
