The Victoria Electric Guitar Company doesn't exist as its own standalone manufacturer; rather, "Victoria" was a brand name used in the 1960s. These guitars were manufactured in Japan by OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) companies—predominantly Zenon (a large Japanese music publishing company)—and were imported and rebranded for the US market
History and Origins
- The Zenon Connection: In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Zenon decided to capitalize on the booming global popularity of the electric guitar. They acquired and utilized local Japanese factories to produce these instruments for export. [1]
- Branding: These instruments were often sold under a variety of different badges on the headstock. While many carried the "Victoria" nameplate, the exact same guitars were also distributed under the brand names Zenon or Zimgar. [1, 2]
- The "Wave" Design: Victoria guitars from the mid-1960s (often referred to as "wave" models) are particularly memorable for their quirky features. The most defining characteristic is a neck plate that extends upward onto the wooden neck itself. This specific build detail is a telltale sign of early Zenon production
The Japanese "Guitar Boom" EraVictoria guitars belong to a larger wave of vintage Japanese imports from the 1960s and 1970s. During this era, Japanese manufacturing underwent a massive evolution, scaling up quickly to satisfy the massive international demand driven by the British Invasion and American surf rock. [1, 2, 3]While early 1960s Japanese guitars—including those with the Victoria badge—were initially mass-produced entry-level instruments known for idiosyncratic electronics and quirky designs, the foundational factories from this era helped establish Japan's reputation as a world-class guitar maker by the late 1970s.
