The B&S Challenger line was developed in the early 2000’s, offering a German-made alternative to the Bach Strad. The 3137 model is based on the Bach 37, and this particular trumpet has a one-piece, hand hammered sheet sterling bell and sterling silver leadpipe. Silver bells are known for their brightness and projection, and this trumpet is no exception. It has an incredibly pure tone and doesn’t distort at high volumes. An electroformed silver bell, like Bach’s Sterling Silver Plus (which is a misnomer for their 99.9% silver bell) is heavier, thicker, and lacks the fine response of a sheet sterling bell. This trumpet is in excellent condition and has lightning fast valves and slides. There is a small amount of lacquer wear around the valve section, and one small repair mark at the edge of the bell flare (see photos). By my estimate, this trumpet has around 10oz of silver in it, which is worth around $700 at current market prices. Purchasing sheet sterling and working it into a bell and leadpipe would obviously be quite a bit more expensive.
