The Chorus 80J was developed with French trumpet virtuoso Guy Touvron, and was one of the iconic trumpets of the 1990’s and early 2000s. It’s best known for its use by famous jazz musicians like Eddie Henderson, Freddie Hendrix, Jim Rotondi, and Terrel Stafford, but the 80J was also quite popular with broadway, studio, and classical players alike. This trumpet went against the trends in the age of the heavy horn: its lightweight bell and cornet-like leadpipe give it plenty of sass, making it fast to speak and quick to light up. It has an ML bore and 4-⅞” bell with a taper in the Bach 72 ballpark.
This trumpet was made circa 2005, 10 years after the debut of this model, and 6 years before Selmer would stop making trumpets altogether. This horn is in good shape for its age, but has certainly seen a good amount of use. The lacquer shows age-related discoloration and loss around contact points on the valve section, leadpipe, and valve slides. I don’t see any evidence of resolders, but there are signs of minor repair in the bell bend and on the bell flare. The leadpipe has a few spots that could be red rot but appear more brown than red. The valves have compression, but have accumulated some wear. A heavy valve oil is recommended to prevent sticking and ensure strong compression.
