We have completed servicing and testing of this really nice TASCAM 464 with the original box and manual. For a device that’s almost 40 years old it’s in incredible condition. There are a few physical signs of use around the edges, but they are minimal. The infamous “C-Gear” has been replaced and surrounding mechanism has been regreased. The capstan belt has been replaced with a high-quality Fix Your Audio belt.
Repairs:
• The C-Gear has been replaced
• A common issue with TASCAMs is the INPUT and record-select slide switches become dirty and do not work properly. When this happens, the signal can cut in out and out in playback or recording. We make it a point to disassemble the mixer and thoroughly clean these switches multiple times before reassembly.
Calibration:
• Calibrate both motor speeds: 3000 Hz, 6000 Hz
• Calibrate tape head azimuth (checked but did not need calibration)
• Calibrate tape playback level for even playback with +- 1 dbV
• Calibrate tape record level for even recording +- 1 dbV
- Calibrate meter voltage
Cleaning:
We also take pride in restoring the cosmetic condition of the units we work on, while making sure to not damage the original finish or patina.
• All knob and fader caps were cleaned with an ultrasonic cleaner
• The faceplate was removed and cleaned with soap and water to get dirt/dust off. Then it was cleaned with windex.
• Note that in some cases there are stubborn marks that we leave. Rather than scrub them away with a harsh cleaner which can damage the original finish and leave the unit looking spotty.
Maintenance:
• Replace belts with low wow/flutter belts
• Clean and demagnetize tape heads
• Oil capstan bearing with high quality German oil. It greatly improves wow/flutter
• Clean all input and output jacks with Deoxit on a cue tip. No messy spraying.
• Clean all potentiometers and faders with contact cleaner
• Check for and fix broken or weak solder joints
Quality Assurance:
We also do a thorough QA of all our units. This process includes hooking the unit up to a vintage Hammond drum machine, Nord organ, and various other gear. We then record music on all 4 channels, and test all the functionality that would be used when recording music. It only gets listed once it has been tested this way. If any issues are found, we fix the issues before listing. This ensures that the unit is functioning as it should without a doubt!
This unit has a lot of IO and all line and mic inputs were tested. Aux out 1 and 2 were tested. Inputs 5/6, 7/8, 9/10, 11/12 were tested.
All original transport buttons are working great, and do not require extra pressure to engage. This is a sign of little use and good storage.
Other notes:
• It includes the original box and manual and the original box foam
• It comes with a new power supply and bulk-erased vintage type 1 tape
• Free USPS ground shipping. Will usually ship same day.
