Dave Hill Designs Europa 1 Mic Preamp
Selling my Dave Hill Designs Europa 1 single-channel microphone preamp.
This has been used only in my studio for the last 15 years. It has lived in a professional recording setup and has been used on vocals, guitars, bass, synths, drums, and line-level sources during mixing.
The Europa 1 is not just a clean high-end preamp. Its main magic is the creative control it gives you over the sound. It has variable input impedance, a variable slew-rate control, and independent even and odd harmonic controls, allowing it to move from clean and detailed to thick, saturated, clipped, and harmonically rich in a very musical way.
The slew-rate and harmonic controls are the standout features. You can use it as a clean, modern mic pre, or push it into a more colored tone where the input clips and saturates in a very pleasing way. The even harmonics can add body and richness, while the odd harmonics can add edge, bite, and presence. The speed/slew control lets you shape transients in a way that feels more like tone-sculpting than a normal preamp control.
It also works great on line-level sources, so it can be used during mixdown to add color, saturation, and movement to already-recorded tracks.
Designed by Dave Hill, known for his work with Crane Song, Summit Audio, and other high-end analog designs, the Europa 1 is a very unique piece of studio gear. It is one of those preamps that can be transparent when needed, but its real strength is how creative and flexible it gets when you start using the harmonic and slew controls.
Everything works properly. Cosmetically it shows normal rack/studio wear from long-term studio use, but nothing that affects function. See photos.
