VINTAGE EARLY 70’S VAMP MK III "AUDIO-PACK" 100 WATT ALL TUBE AMPLIFIER.
"VAMPOWER" (OFTEN SHORTENED TO VAMP) IS A RARE LEGENDARY BRITISH AMPLIFIER LINE FROM THE LATE 60’S/ EARLY 70’S FAMOUSLY CHAMPIONED BY GLAM ROCK ICON MARC BOLAN OF T. REX. KNOWN FOR ITS CLASSIC, WARM VINTAGE BRITISH ROCK TONE AND EXCEPTIONAL CLEAN / LIGHT CRUNCH,THE BRAND HAS A RICH HISTORY.
FOUNDED IN THE UK IN THE LATE 60’S AND MANUFACTURED IN KENT, THE COMPANY WAS KNOWN TO HAVE ONLY PRODUCED ABOUT 250 UNITS UNTIL IT CEASED OPERATIONS SOMEWHERE AROUND 1973.
WHILE I HAVE SEEN A FEW VAMP HEADS IN MY TIME I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANOTHER LIKE MINE. THE FEATURES DISTINGUISHING THIS UNIT FROM OTHERS IS THE TREMOLO CIRCUIT AND THE REVERB FEATURE.
THE AMP HAS A SINGLE CHANNEL WITH HIGH LOW INPUTS WITH 2 BAND EQ (TREBLE AND BASS) BOTH HIGH AND LOW INPUTS ARE USEFUL DEPENDING WHAT SOUND YOU'RE GOING FOR.
THE SOUND IS RETRO 70’S CLASSIC ROCK. WITH THE VOLUME SET LOWER THE SOUND IS CLEAN AND INCREDIBLE IN TERMS OF THE CLARITY, AND RICH ORGANIC SOUND, TRULY WONDERFUL, CLEAR , CHIMEY AND GLASSY TONES BUT WITH PLENTY OF LOW END. AS YOU CRANK THE AMP UP THE OVERDRIVE DISTORTION COMES IN TO PLAY IN A WONDERFUL WAY. ITS NOT CRAZY OVERDRIVE BUT GREAT SOUNDING ORGANIC AND THE AMP REMAINS TIGHT AND INCREDIBLY WELL VOICED.THE AMP WAS DESIGNED WITH EL34 OUTPUT TUBES. I USED IT LIKE THAT MOST OF THE TIME IVE OWNED IT AND THEN IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS I STARTED PLAYING THE AMP KNOWING I WAS GOING TO SELL IT AND HAD A QUARTET OF 6550’S LET ME TELL YOU THE AMP NEVER SOUNDED BETTER. THE OVERALL IMPRESSION WITH 6550’S IS A TIGHTER, AND POWERFUL SOUND WITH BETTER FOCUS, MORE DESIRABLE LOW END AND MORE DESIRABLE OVERDRIVE WITH EVEN VOICING AT ANY VOLUME. THE AMP PAIRS WONDERFULLY WITH OVERDRIVE, DISTORTION AND TONE COLORING PEDALS.
VAMP AMPS WERE MADE BY TRIUMPH ELECTRONICS FOR PART OF THEIR HISTORY. TRIUMPH ALSO SUB CONTRACTED FOR VOX ON AC 50 AND AC 100 UNITS AND ANOTHER RARE AMP COMPANY NAMED JENNINGS, WHICH WAS A COMPANY CREATED BY DICK DENNEY AND TOM JENNINGS AFTER THEY LEFT THE ORIGINAL VOX JMI COMPANY IN 1967 WHEN ROSE MORRIS BOUGHT THEM OUT. PERHAPS THEIR INVOLVEMENT IN BUILDING AMPS FOR VOX GAVE THEM A FAMILIARITY WITH TREMOLO AND REVERB CIRCUITS. YOU WILL SEE JENNINGS HEADS AND VAMP HEADS THAT LOOK ALMOST THE SAME.
THE TREMOLO CIRCUIT ON THIS AMP IS QUITE COOL. WHILE THE REVERB WORKED FINE FOR MOST OF MY TIME WITH IT, IT HAS SINCE STOP WORKING PROPERLY. BECAUSE I DONT USE THE REVERB I WILL LEAVE THE OPTION TO REPAIR TO THE NEW OWNER.
THE AMP IS USED AND SHOWS LIGHT SIGNS OF USE FOR AN AMP OF 50+ YEARS OLD. IT HAS BEEN SERVICED WITHIN THE LAST FEW MONTHS.I HAD THE JACKS, POTS AND SWITCHES CLEANED. INSTALLED A NEW SET OF 6550’S WHICH WERE EXPENSIVE! AND I HAD THE BIAS PROPERLY ADJUSTED WITH THE INTENTION OF THE NEW OWNER BEING ABLE TO PLUG AND PLAY AND ENJOY RIGHT AWAY. THE AMP HAS A 115 V TAP SO USE IN THE USA IS EASY, HOWEVER I DO USE IT WITH A VARIAC TO DIAL IN 115 V EXACTLY. NOT A REQUIREMENT, BUT I LIKE USING WITH THE SUPPLY VOLTAGE EXACTLY WHERE THE AMP CALLS FOR IT.
THIS AMP HAS BEEN IN MY COLLECTION SINCE THE LATE 90’S EARLY 2000’S. I BOUGHT IT FROM CARL NEILSEN OF ROCK BOTTOM U.K. AND ITS BEEN WITH ME EVER SINCE. ID LOVE TO FIND A BRITISH VINTAGE AMP COLLECTOR TO GIVE IT A NEW HOME WORTHY OF ITS KILLER SOUND AND VINTAGE RARITY.

HERE IS SOME HISTORY AND INFORMATIVE DATA.
If you’re asking about a Vampower Professional Mk III 100 (sometimes called the Mk III Audio Pack 100), it’s a rare British 100-watt valve amp from the early 1970s made in Kent, England. Vampower amps have a cult following because of their rarity and association with players such as Marc Bolan.
Based on recent listings and dealer sales:
- Rough/fair-condition heads needing work: about $1,500–$2,000 USD.
- Good, serviced examples: about $2,000–$3,000 USD.
- Complete original setups with matching vintage cabinets can exceed $3,000 USD.
A realistic current market value for a functioning head-only Mk III 100 is probably around $2,000–$2,500 USD, assuming it’s original and in good working order.
Vampower is one of those fascinating small British amp companies from a golden period of the evolution of classic rock music
in a time were tube amp designs and engineers were vibrant and growing while competing to evolve and offer better sound more power and more features to musicians.
Key people behind Vampower
Dave Roffey
- Generally credited as the principal designer of the original Vamp/Vampower amplifiers.
- He previously designed a 100-watt valve head for Triumph Electronics, which became the basis for early Vampower products.
- According to surviving accounts, he left the company around 1973, shortly before it folded.
Frank Taylor
- A concert promoter associated with South Eastern Entertainments in Lewisham.
- Became interested in Roffey’s amp design and helped launch the company, first as “Vamp” and later “Vampower.”
The Marc Bolan connection
The most important figure associated with the brand was undoubtedly Marc Bolan of T. Rex.
- Bolan used Vampower amplifiers on stage during the peak years of T. Rex.
- The association gave the tiny company outsized visibility in the glam-rock era.
- Multiple historical sources and enthusiasts note that Bolan appeared in Vampower advertising and was effectively the brand’s most famous user.
How big was the company?
Not very big at all.
- Vampower operated in Bromley, Kent, England, beginning around 1968–69.
- Production appears to have lasted only until about 1973.
- Modern collectors and restorers estimate that only a few hundred amps were built; one Reverb listing cites roughly 240 total amplifiers produced.
Interesting historical note
The current revival company states that the original Vampower amps were manufactured through Triumph Electronics, a firm also associated with production of certain Vox-era amplifiers. That connection helps explain why Vampower circuits often seem related to late-1960s British amp design yet remain distinctly their own.
Why collectors care today
Your Mk III 100 isn’t just a vintage amp—it’s from a short-lived boutique British maker that was active during the same era as early Orange, Sound City, Hiwatt, and Vox. The combination of:
- very low production numbers,
- unusual circuitry,
- the Marc Bolan/T. Rex association,
