For sale is a vintage G&L SC-3 from the legendary Leo Fender era (circa 1984–1987). This is a "Second Style" model, featuring the more aggressive, Strat-like horns and a slab body that replaced the original rounded Mustang-style shape in early 1984. This model represents the transition of the SC series into a more professional, "hot-rodded" workhorse.
Materials & Construction:
- Body Wood: Solid 2-piece Maple or Poplar (standard for mid-80s SC models).
- Neck Wood: North American Hard Rock Maple.
- Fingerboard Material: Typically Maple or Rosewood (please refer to photos for your specific board).
- Nut Material: Period-correct Plastic.
- Bridge Materials: Hardened steel bridge plate with cold-rolled steel bolts and massive brass inserts anchored into the body. Includes a machined aluminum tremolo arm.
- Pickup Components: Ceramic block magnets with steel pole pieces (the secret to the MFD's high-output clarity).
- Hardware Finish: Chrome-plated steel.
Technical Specifications:
- Scale Length: 25 1/2 inches.
- Number of Frets: 22 medium-jumbo frets.
- Fingerboard Radius: 7.5 inches (Standard Leo Fender era radius).
- Nut Width: 1 5/8 inches.
- Neck Profile: Slender "Slim C" shape.
Condition & Features:
- Refinished: The body was refinished by a previous owner in a transparent burgundy color. This is an amateur refinish, not professional work. It has a rustic, hand-applied look that shows the wood grain but lacks the high-gloss factory finish.
- Cosmetic Condition: The guitar shows plenty of "mojo" with visible scratches and dings throughout the body and headstock, as seen in the photos.
- Electronics: Original G&L electronics including a 5-way pickup selector and master volume/tone controls.
- Hardware: Features original G&L-branded tuners for superior stability.
Why This Guitar?
The Second Style SC-3 is prized by players for its more modern feel and balanced body shape compared to the original 1982 version. While original-condition examples from this era typically sell for $900–$1,500, this "player's grade" instrument is priced lower due to the non-professional refinish and cosmetic wear. It is a fantastic entry point into the world of vintage USA-made G&L guitars.
Includes the original hardware as pictured. Sold as-is. No case.
