I have never owned another to compare, but the unit takes 5-8 seconds to really get the full effect going. Not sure if it was made that way, or if there's a capacitor that's getting a little slow. Decided it wasn't worth the possible cost of checking out/repairs, and since it works if you can just wait a few seconds, it is being sold as-is, basically for the price of trying to purchase a Reticon 5106 chip on the used market.
