The NS Pulse 5 holds down the low end in style, largely thanks to a pair of EMG 40DC humbuckers. These ultra-powerful pickups are praised for their noise-free performance, low-end output, and wide-open tone, making them ideal for heavier genres while fully capable of handling softer styles when dialed back. Mix these with the onboard active preamp, and EMG 40DC humbuckers provide a massive array of tone-shaping options, from full and round to treble-enhanced "zing" and beyond. The NS Pulse 5 includes Spector’s TonePump JR active preamp. This preamp employs JFET-based circuitry rather than op-amps, which yields many tube-like characteristics. When you overdrive an op-amp (something that happens at the peak of nearly every note you play), it clips and needs a moment to recover. This results in a perceptible tone loss. Like tubes, the TonePump’s JFET-based circuitry doesn’t do this. Rather, it softly distorts, producing a second harmonic that fuses seamlessly into your note. Beyond that, the signal right after the peak comes through loud and clear — no recovery time required. We’re really impressed with the clarity of this preamp — it makes a world of difference!
