An old, weird, wonderful little box that punches absurdly above its price. Despite the name and the vibrato label, the Chicken Salad is really a Uni-Vibe in disguise. It uses the same lightbulb and photoresistor circuit design as the classic Uni-Vibe, which is exactly why it produces that three dimensional, watery, slightly off kilter swirl that more expensive pedals chase. There is a whole cottage industry built around rehousing and modding these, that is how good the core circuit is.

Two knobs for speed and intensity get you from a gentle shimmer to a full psychedelic 60s swoosh, the kind of vibe you hear on Gilmour and Hendrix tones. My dad and I did the popular internal mod on this one, encasing the photocell in foil and covering up the stock black plastic, which makes the swirl noticeably more lush and intense when you want it. It is a well known trick for getting this little box even closer to true Uni-Vibe territory.

This is a budget cult classic that players regularly say sounds as good as or better than units two and three times the price. It is what it is: an older plastic enclosure pedal with some wear, but it works perfectly and sounds fantastic.
