This model Yamaha DX7s came out in 1987 and offered some improvement over the original DX7. Reading online it is said to have offered more modern hardware and cleaner 16-bit sound over the original while remaining fully patch compatible with the early DX7 sounds.
Features 16 voice polyphony but has upgraded 16-bit digital to analog converters for cleaner less grainy output. Push button selectors replaced the membrane touch switching that was fragile and prone to problems needing repairs.
Internal patch memory was doubled to hold 64 voices up from 32.
Those are some facts online about this model.
I've had this in my living room unused for a few years because it needed the internal battery replaced. I had that done recently and tested it out and everything seems to be working fine. I'm not a keyboard guy but I was able to access the sounds and controls with a little Google help.
I switched to local access to get to the internal patches and scrolled through the 2 banks of 32 and everything responded perfectly. There are many, many editing capabilities that I did not explore but the switching all worked fine as I selected items with the push buttons.
I played and tested through a good little amp and everything sounded good.
There is one cartridge that came with it and seems to be firmly held when inserted in its slot and is easy to remove. I don't know how to use it so that's all I know. Can't say if it's blank or contains patches.
Cosmetically it's not bad with some scratching as you can see in the pictures but no denting or signs of rough times or careless handling. There are 4 screws missing out of many on the bottom of the casing. I didn't have any replacements that fit but nothing feels loose where they are missing.
So that's it. My understanding of keyboards is limited but I'll try to answer questions but please understand that I don't know much in any nuanced aspects of this like don't ask me to evaluate the characteristics of the after touch on string patches or anything like that. You get the idea, right?
Just kidding with you.
Thanks for looking!
