TEAC A-3340S 1/4” 4-Track Reel-to-Reel Recorder – Fully Serviced + 14 Reels of Tape + NAB Adapters

Condition: Used – Fully Functional

For sale is a vintage 1970s TEAC A-3340S 4-track reel-to-reel recorder, one of the most influential home recording machines ever produced. This deck has been regularly used in my home studio since December 2025 and continues to perform exactly as it should.

The machine was professionally serviced and lubricated last year, including installation of new belts, inspection and testing of the main capacitors, speed verification, transport servicing, and general preventative maintenance. Since service, it has seen extensive but careful use and has remained reliable throughout.

The only known issue is one of the reel table tie downs is a little snug, but still works. It hasn’t been an issue for me, and for that reason I haven’t replaced it.

Cosmetically, it presents well for its age with normal signs of use, light wear, and minor cosmetic imperfections consistent with a nearly 50-year-old machine. Please review all photos carefully for exact condition.

Why the TEAC A-3340S Matters

The A-3340S is widely regarded as one of the machines that helped launch the home multitrack recording revolution. Released in the early 1970s, it offered true 4-track recording on 1/4” tape at a price musicians could afford. Countless independent artists, engineers, and producers used these machines to create layered recordings outside of traditional commercial studios.

Notably, this is the model often associated with pioneering home-recording workflows and was a favorite among musicians who wanted to experiment with overdubbing and multitrack production before affordable cassette multitrackers existed.

Features & Benefits

* 4 discrete tracks on 1/4” tape

* Simultaneous overdubbing and multitrack recording

* 7.5 and 15 IPS tape speeds

* Excellent analog saturation and tape compression characteristics

* Robust all-metal construction

* Extremely serviceable design with strong parts support from the enthusiast community

* Compatible with 10.5” reels using NAB adapters

One of the unique advantages of the A-3340S is its AC synchronous capstan motor design. Because the motor speed is locked to the incoming 60Hz power frequency, these machines generally do not suffer from the drifting speed issues commonly found in belt-driven DC motor designs. When properly maintained, they are known for remarkably stable tape speed and pitch consistency.

Included Accessories & Tape

Included with the recorder:

* Pair of 10” NAB reel adapters

* Four (4) used but good-condition 10” reels of Maxell XLI 35-180B tape

* Four (4) used 10” reels of Scotch 207 Mastering Tape

* Two (2) deadstock/sealed reels of Scotch 203-18W2 7” tape

* Four (4) additional used reels of Scotch 203-18W2 tape

That’s a substantial amount of recording media included with the machine, allowing the next owner to begin recording immediately.

Operational Notes

* Transport functions operate properly

* Fast forward and rewind perform as expected

* Playback and recording functions operational

* Speed tested and verified during service

* Machine has been regularly exercised and used, which is often preferable to a deck that has sat unused for years

Shipping

This is a large, heavy, and delicate vintage recorder. It will be carefully packed with reel tables removed and secured separately to ensure safe transport.

Final Thoughts

The TEAC A-3340S remains one of the most sought-after vintage multitrack machines ever built. Whether you’re recording alternative country, garage rock, ambient music, experimental projects, or simply looking for a piece of recording history, this deck offers genuine analog multitrack workflow and classic tape sound that helped define an era.
