This is a Japanese-made ES-335 style semi-hollow electric guitar by Tokai, one of Japan’s long-established guitar brands with more than 50 years of history. Japanese manufacturers still producing high-quality set-neck models are becoming increasingly rare, and Japanese-made semi-hollow guitars are even harder to find.
This model is the TOKAI ES-60s w/BKP. It is inspired by early 1960s ES-335 styling, featuring the classic combination of small block inlays and a small pickguard. Compared with the 1950s-style dot inlay and large pickguard layout, this 60s specification has a more refined and iconic ES-335 appearance.
The guitar is equipped with Gotoh Kluson-type tuners. These lightweight vintage-style tuners help maintain a lively and balanced response around the headstock area. The bridge and tailpiece are also made by Gotoh, providing reliable performance and solid tuning stability.
The guitar features a lacquer finish. Lacquer has a distinctive feel and will naturally age over time, making it especially appealing to players who appreciate vintage-style finishes and instruments that develop character through use.
One of the main highlights of this model is the pickup set. It comes loaded with Bare Knuckle “The Mule” humbuckers, handmade in the UK. The Mule is a vintage-output pickup inspired by 1950s PAF humbuckers. It offers an open, clear, and dynamic tone without excessive compression. Although the guitar has a 60s-style ES look, the PAF-style pickup choice makes it highly practical for blues, jazz blues, classic rock, fusion, city pop, and studio work.
The Bare Knuckle The Mule pickups respond very naturally to volume control adjustments, allowing the gain to clean up smoothly when rolling back the volume. Combined with Tokai’s Japanese craftsmanship, set-neck construction, semi-hollow body design, and lacquer finish, this guitar delivers both refined build quality and a rich, expressive tone.
This model comes with a hard case. Since lacquer finishes are more delicate than many modern finishes, the hard case is especially useful for transport and long-term protection.
