Vintage Ludwig No. 266 Drummer Parade Drum 12x17 Mahogany Shell

Rare pre-war Ludwig marching drums continue to attract collectors, historians, and players alike, and this Ludwig No. 266 Drummer Parade Drum is a wonderful surviving example. Dating to approximately 1935, this drum represents Ludwig's innovative approach to field and parade percussion during the Golden Age of American drum manufacturing.

Featuring a 12" x 17" mahogany shell, original parade drum hardware, and several desirable original components, this drum offers both historical significance and surprising musical versatility. At some point in its life, the shell was refinished, giving it a clean appearance while preserving the character and charm of a nearly 90-year-old instrument.

Originally designed as a field and parade drum, the No. 266 utilizes Ludwig's distinctive single-key tension system with double hook clamp rods, allowing the entire drum to be tensioned quickly from a single point. This example retains its original Ludwig spread snare strainer, silk cord snares, and original Ludwig drum key.

Condition & Performance

This drum remains fully playable and is currently set up in a configuration that works exceptionally well as a large vintage tom. The original calfskin batter head remains in place, preserving much of the drum's historical character, while a modern 17" Remo Pinstripe head has been installed on the opposite side for durability and practical use.

The original Ludwig spread snare mechanism and silk cord snare assembly are still present. If the next owner installs a proper 17" snare-side head, this drum has the potential to become an outstanding parade snare drum once again. As it sits today, it offers a deep, warm, and distinctive voice that works remarkably well as a vintage field drum, concert drum, or oversized tom.

A Rare Piece of Ludwig History

Surviving pre-war Ludwig parade drums are increasingly difficult to find, especially examples retaining original hardware, snares, strainer, and key. The No. 266's distinctive single-key tension design, spread snare system, and mahogany shell make it a fascinating example of 1930s American drum craftsmanship. Whether destined for a collection, restoration project, or active use, this rare Ludwig offers a direct connection to one of the most important periods in the company's history.
