Up for sale is a fantastic piece of jazz-age history: a 1923 A.C. Fairbanks / Vega Style F 4-string Tenor Banjo (Serial #51912). This short-scale, 17-fret instrument is an absolute joy to look at and is perfect for traditional jazz, ragtime, or traditional Irish music players looking for that classic Boston-era tone.

Please note that this banjo is a high-quality vintage composite/player's instrument, blending two authentic eras of Boston craftsmanship:

  • The Neck & Dowel Stick: Factory-stamped Vega Style F with a clear 1923 serial number (51912). This was the definitive final year for the classic 17-fret short scale before Vega moved to 19 frets. The neck profile is straight, the wood grain is gorgeous, and the heel joint is structurally solid. Includes original friction tuning pegs.
  • The Rim/Pot Assembly: An earlier, highly resonant genuine multi-ply maple rim featuring the dual "A.C. Fairbanks Co." and "Vega Company" stamps. The neck heel features period-correct luthier shims for optimal string action and stable playability.

Condition Report:

  • Cosmetic: Very clean for a 103-year-old instrument. Honest, authentic play-wear on the ebonized fingerboard (mostly frets 1–3) and light finish scuffing on the bass side of the headstock face.
  • Hardware: Original rolled-brass tone ring, tension hoops, hooks, and shoes are intact with expected vintage patina but no heavy pitting or rust. Fitted with a classic "No Knot" patent-dated tailpiece.
  • Playability: Features a modern synthetic replacement head (frosted/Fiberskin style) providing excellent tuning stability. Frets show normal vintage wear but have plenty of life left.

This is a remarkably solid, structurally sound hybrid banjo that delivers the classic, bright, punchy tone Vega is famous for. Perfect as a ready-to-play tenor, or as a premium donor pot for a 5-string clawhammer conversion project.
