The 1993 Rickenbacker 650S "Sierra" marks the very first production year of a highly distinct, solid-body electric guitar line that deviated from Rickenbacker’s traditional semi-hollow aesthetic. Built as part of the Combo 600 Series, it combines a striking, natural multi-wood construction with modern playability features rarely seen on older Rickenbacker models.
Specifications
- Body & Neck Construction: Features a sleek, neck-through design. The center section is a one-piece Eastern Rock Maple neck that runs the entire length of the guitar, flanked by solid American Walnut body wings.
- Finish: Coated in a distinct, hand-rubbed oil finish rather than a heavy gloss lacquer. This leaves the wood unvarnished, offering a fast, smooth neck feel.
- Fretboard: Built with a 24-fret maple fingerboard, featuring a 12-inch radius and a 24 3/4" scale length. Notably, the fretboard profile is noticeably wider than traditional, tightly spaced Rickenbacker necks, making it friendlier for modern playing styles.
- Electronics: Equipped with dual factory Rickenbacker humbucking pickups. These eliminate standard single-coil hum while providing a thicker, high-output tone capable of driving heavy rock and blues, yet they still retain a bit of that classic "Rick jangle".
- Hardware: Outfitted with premium gold-plated hardware including a top-loading hardtail bridge and control knobs which visually distinguishes the "Sierra" from its sister model, the chrome-plated "Dakota
