This 1956 Gibson Les Paul Special is in good vintage condition. This guitar has been heavily modified. At some point in time, someone converted this Les Paul to a lefty and during this time they cut away the bass side of the body giving it an asymmetrical double cutaway shape. The wiring harness was relocated to the other side of the body and the toggle switch was relocated to the center of the body behind the bridge. The body was sprayed over in an off-yellow color - the neck was completely left alone and retains its original profile and Limed Mahogany (TV Yellow) finish. This guitar was then converted back to right handed - the left handed bridge stud holes were filled and touched up and the old holes were redrilled for the installation of a Glaser Instruments Music City Bridge (The original wraparound tailpiece is included). The electronics were moved back over to the original side leaving holes on the other side body. This instrument has been professionally refretted with medium jumbo frets and a new nut was made and installed. The electronics are original throughout with the exception of one potentiometer. The tuning machines have been changed to a set of mid to late 60s Kluson double lines and there are some visible holes on the back of the peghead from a previous set of tuners. We left the pickguard installed on the other side but it could also be moved back to the original spot if desired.
This Les Paul has a very chunky mid 50s neck profile that feels absolutely killer in the hand and thanks to the pro refret, set up and Glaser Instruments Music City Bridge, this guitar plays incredible up and down the Brazilian rosewood fingerboard with low snappy action and great intonation. Both of the original P-90 pickups sound phenomenal. This guitar delivers some of the most righteous, inspiring vintage tones that I have heard in a long while. The pickups have strong output with a very woody yet articulate and hollow bite. It is beautiful sounding in the neck position through a nice clean Fender style amp and the bridge position absolutely sizzles when driven with tons of clarity and character. Some of the tone characteristics from this guitar may be contributed to the other side of the body being routed out, giving it a bit more of a “hollow” sound or maybe… it’s just magical. Who knows! Either way, this guitar delivers the goods. Here at the shop, we refer to this Les Paul as “Cyclops” and it truly is a monster. This guitar weighs 7lb 7oz and is housed in a very heavy duty Duesenberg hardshell case that fits like a glove. We will ship this instrument out promptly and securely from our little shop here in Tennessee to your front door!
