Ya know, if you keep a modest-priced solid state practice amp in the same room as a Black Panel Fender Champ and you DON’T actually want to throw it in the river… it’s probably a pretty decent little amp. It turns out I acquired two practice amps, independently, that will have rather similar descriptions. Both were purchased “untested” but are in excellent shape and function perfectly. Cool. This one is an early-1980s “teal stripe” Peavey Rage 158. Made in USA. Much louder than a bedroom amp, and perfect for a jam session or even a small basement/house party gig. Eight-inch speaker, BTW. Normal Gain (non-overdrive) channel is relatively warm and full, and NOT at all cold and sterile. Many reviewers suggest this amp takes pedals quite well. The Lead Gain channel not surprisingly gets a bit “cheap practice amp” sounding when you drive the saturation hard, BUT it actually does a surprisingly decent blues/rock tone with the pre-gain way back and the post run on 10. Most users looking to go dark and metallic would likely run a good pedal through the Normal Gain channel and work it from there. Peavey gear is rugged and reliable, and this earlier version offers a well-respected option for a low-dough small amp. And, if you eventually go for stage gear, or dive down the tube amp rabbit hole, you’ll easily sell this for your purchase price.
