Here we have the Boss DS-1 distortion pedal Japan "Long Dash" version. This is the earliest and most collectible version of the iconic orange Boss distortion pedal. Manufactured in Japan between 1978 and 1981, it is highly sought after by collectors for its legendary Toshiba TA7136AP integrated circuit (IC) chip, which delivers a raw, clear, and punchy vintage tone.

Key Identifying FeaturesYou can spot an authentic Japan "Long Dash" DS-1 by looking for these specific features:

  • The Long Dash: On the front label, look at the text DS-1. The hyphen (-) is physically longer. The letter "D" in "DS-1" sits directly underneath the letter "t" in "Distortion". Later models have a shorter dash where the "D" aligns with the "i".
  • Silver Thumb Screw: The earliest runs use a shining silver screw to secure the battery compartment. A few transition models from late 1981 feature the long dash but have a black plastic screw.
  • Black Label: The foil label on the bottom of the pedal is black and clearly reads "Made in Japan".
  • ACA Power Sticker: These early analog pedals require the vintage Boss ACA power supply (12V DC) or a 9V battery to operate correctly, rather than the modern PSA 9V adapters.
  • Tested by our technicians, works as it should.
  • Cosmetically: A few minor chips in the paint, but excellent otherwise.
  • Comes in original box (pictured)!

NOTE: Too cool. We just shipped very recently this summer a 1967 MapleGlo Rickenbacker 6-12 Converter 'comb' guitar to Billy Corigan of Smashing Pumpkins! We also then shipped a vintage 50 watt Marshall head to L.A. studio-touring guitarist extraodinaire, Michael Landau, and 2 vintage guitars to Jack White's organization down in Nashville just a few days before his 50th. birthday! mmm? Add 'The Kentucky Head Hunters' to the list, just sold Greg a cool little 50's Valco tube combo amp!

Gordy's Music has become a Detroit institution! Our shop was used as a filming location for a few films like "Miracle in Motor City" a Christmas movie on Lifetime (featuring Smoky Robinson). We've supplied gear for movies including "Bill & Ted Face The Music" with Keanu Reeves. We've got decades of celebrity customers, including recent visits from Beck, Eric Johnson, and we recently sold Billy Joel's bassist a cool Gibson SG he is in love with. One day a while back Andre 3000 and his group stopped in to browse as they were playing Masonic Temple that night and right after that we sold an old oil can Morley Wah Vibrato pedal to Credence Clearwater Revival's thee John Fogerty!

We are having and have had a lot of fun here at Gordy's Music! I was just remembering about 35 years ago a tour bus pulled up to our little shop, and who rolls right in and hangs out for an hour? Lenny Kravitz and his entire group, right about the same time I was selling many guitars to and chauffeuring around Dee Dee Ramone who had an apartment a block down from my house.
