Ludwig 1960/61 Pre-Serial Super 400 Chrome Over Brass 5x14 Snare Drum

Up for sale is the coveted Ludwig COB Super 400 Snare drum. This is a player's drum. It is very difficult to photograph but the Chrome has swirl marks and surface scratches throughout the shell, lug casings, and the original chrome over brass hoops. The bottom hoop top flange has some deep scratches but they are only cosmetic. The drum was fully taken apart, cleaned and polished. It was recently sent to Derek Mantz of MKE Drum Co. to rectify some roundness issues of the shell and hoops. The heads fit snug but tune up evently. Tension rods move very smoothly in the casings. Lug casings are stuffed with cotton to limit spring noise. Ultimately selling because I am the rare exception that prefers the tone and feel of Ludalloy shells.

Parts are all completely original except for the black nylon tension rod washers (stacked beneath the original steel washers), the heads, and the wires. Outfitted with fairly new Evans UV1 batter, Evans Snare Side 300, and PureSound Custom 16 strand wires.

• All tension rods are proper for the era but hard to know if they are original to the drum. Some of them are not straight but they tune up just fine with no issues.
• Shell top edge is flat and crimped snare beds show no signs of issue or damage.
• Original Chrome over Brass hoops - some dents and inconsistencies of the top hoop flanges. Very common for this era of drum and for how often it was played!
• Original P83 Functions as expected. Small spring added to allow for counter tension. Slight shell indentations behind the throw off. Gently hammered out but still visible.
• Original Butt Plate.
• Original Round Knob Muffler. Hair ties placed in between the "disc" and the bracket arm to avoid rattling as the rivet came loose over time. Blue loc-tite placed on the muffler threads so it stays in position but can still move.
