There are a few little dings and scratches. Mostly on the back. It's really in very good shape.
I tried to show the string height with the photos. the height starts very low on the first few, and then gradually rises. But that's the way these were designed. Noel liked his action a little high, he used a pick on his recordings and so he needed that extra distance between the string and the fret board to give it that thump that he wanted. It really does produce a good sound. But you have to be strong and active to play it right.
This base has never been monkeyed with. So the action is probably pretty close to what he wanted.
I sold this guitar to a friend many years ago, and he just sold it back to me. he's off to live on a sailboat. It's been a decent environment. He played it a little bit, not much really. Zero frat wear. The strings are old, but he replaced him a few years ago so they sound OK still.
he said he was getting a little bit of some intermittent action with the input. I plugged it in, it worked fine for me. He might've been using a cheap cord.
(Just giving you a heads up)
It could just be the ground prong that needs to be pushed over. But like I said, I plugged it in and it played fine.
Only 1000 of these were built.
It's obviously a collectors item. it's all original.
Fender produced the Noel Redding Signature Jazz Bass for only one year. The limited-edition model was introduced in 1997 as a signed, limited run of 1,000 instruments manufactured in Japan. [1, 2]The tribute bass was meticulously copied from Noel Redding’s original early-to-mid 1960s Fender Jazz Bass, which he used throughout his time with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Fender actually tracked down the person who had bought Noel's original bass years prior, borrowed it to measure the exact specs, and used it as the blueprint for the 1997 reissue. [1, 2, 3, 4]Features of the 1997 release included:
- Body: Alder, finished in a vintage 3-tone sunburst with a tortoiseshell pickguard.
- Neck: Maple with a rosewood fingerboard.
- Electronics: Specially voiced passive Fender pickups to mirror the 1964/1965 original.
- Signature: Many were hand-signed by Noel Redding on the pickguard in silver ink, though the signatures famously wore off easily. [1, 2, 3, 4]
