This was serviced and upgraded by David Allen (Allen Amplification) by previous owner. I don't have a receipt of the work. According to previous owner, here is what Mr. Allen did:
- Cap job! Standard quality caps were used, exact type unknown.
- Reversible bias circuit mod designed to make the preamp tubes clip more evenly, reducing the “fizz”.
- Deepened the tremolo - smooth, full, deep tone now.
- He also updated the power cord with a modern one (the original one was loose on the plug side).
I was told the circuit modifications are subtle and reversible. The amp otherwise remains true to stock specs as far as I know, including the original speaker (told it is an Oxford) and reverb tank cables.
Not sure if the tubes are original or not.
I'm no Fender expert or technician, so I can't tell you much more than what's here, but I've done my best to photograph the inside of the chassis and wiring so you can see for yourself. If you're a tech and/or expert and see something that doesn't look right in the photos or description, please let me know. Happy to answer any questions I can - just keep my limitations in mind!
See attached Youtube video - sound test done 06/2026. Playing a US tele through it, no effects - just straight-in - test with all knobs/controls and both channels, mostly with the bridge pickup.
I replaced the speaker cable with one I bought from Weber, and replaced the reverb tank with a Ruby Reverberation unit. I don't have the original tank. Let me know at purchase if you'd like the original speaker cable and/or power cord - both are in rough shape but available.
Additional details and things to note:
- Newer Fender dust cover included. I don't have the original cover.
- I don't have the footswitch - not sure if this ever came with one - but reverb and tremolo both function normally without one.
- There is a small cutout in upper rear tolex panel from a prior owner.
- There are a few extra holes drilled behind that upper tolex panel from prior owner and inside the cabinet. My guess is they mounted something at some point, or misaligned the panel when they put it back - but who knows.
- Minor cosmetic wear on the bottom.
- Looks like one factory sticker may be missing from the inside of the cabinet.
- There is a small bend in the front-right chassis corner.
- Original speaker was originally cutting out - looks like a prior owner re-soldered the connection point and one of the cables was touching the metal speaker casing, but I had a local speaker shop look at it and they fixed what was done so now it's playing as it should. But you can see some of the prior solder job on the speaker connectors.
I’ve done my best to highlight all relevant details in this listing, including the photos. Please review photos carefully - they are part of the description.
While this amp's not 100% original, it's been extremely well serviced and maintained, stored in a smoke-free, pet-free home since I've owned it. It sounds and plays beautifully - lots of vintage charm and sparkle. It's over 50 years old!
I heard the Princeton's from this era are very similar to the black panel/face ones..and know people love them to gig with 'em (mic'd or plugged into a bigger cab) or use them for studio or home practice...I unfortunately gotta make room, so here we are...
