If you've been on the hunt for a Jazzmaster that has *the* look and sound then this may be the ticket.
This started life as a 90's JM66B. The 66B is a highly revered MIJ Fender, different from most of the MIJ Jazzmasters you normally find for its bound neck and block inlays, as opposed to dots and no binding.
This started life as an olympic white JM66B based on the neck stamp code, but was refinished in an aged nitrocellulose candy apple red. This one is hard to photograph, it looks more like Dakota Red in photos, but rest assured, in person there is actual metallic flake and it is indeed a Candy Apple Red. There's a lot checking and convincing looking aging.
I got this from a studio in LA where it was residing next to a plethora of vintage Fender Jags & JM's. Funny enough, everyone who has ever seen this guitar on stage, or on my social media, immediately think it must be a real deal mid 60's Jazzmaster. The relic job is just that good. It looks exactly how old Candy Apple Red clouded up and wore away over the years, reavealing that white primer coat. Of course some Candy Apple Reds had an Inca Silver or Shoreline Gold undercoat, but in terms of a white undercoat this one couldn't look much more convincing.
This guitar has an incredible neck and just feels like a broken in bat. The frets have no wear or divots and it is set up superbly; low and slinky and an incredibly responsive and tight tremolo arm that does not come loose or feel janky. This is an amazing rhythm guitar and the best JM I've come across for lead work to let loose a la Nels Cline.. this thing just delivers in spades.
The electronics have been upgraded with Seymour Duncan Antiquity I Jazzmaster pickups.. the darker of the two models they offer. It also has 250k pots, so you won't find any shrilly ice-picky highs, just a nice bold and sparkly Jazzmaster tone without ever being too shrill or overbearing. If Tom Bukovac puts 250k pots in his Firebirds, you can imagine how this is a similiar secret weapon move on a Jazzmaster..
Orange drop caps with the 250k pots, this thing sounds nice and warm like a '59 JM as opposed to mid 60's. Tom Verlaine and Nels Cline approved! Rhythm circuit installed but currently disabled.. easy to rewire if you desire.
Perfect dark and rich rosewood fretboard that feels and looks incredible.
Serial number was lost in the refinishing process, but the neck stamp at the end of the heel of the neck is still intact. Not a heavy guitar either, super balanced and comfortable sitting down or standing up.
Ships in a new condition Fender black tolex hardshell case.
I have a new, custom made Spitfire pickguard for this in their vintage white material that I recently put on (see last couple photos to see the new Spitfire guard and aged white pickup covers). I also put on some aged white pickup covers. Spitfire guards are in high demand.. I waited months and months for this guard and it cost nearly $100.
This JM is also setup perfectly when it comes to Jazzmasters.. proper bridge pickup height, proper bridge height for a good break angle, etc. The stock Jazzmaster bridge actually works very well because of this..
This is the best Jazzmaster I've come across in a world where it is VERY hard to find a vintage-looking Jazzmaster.. you won't find a better option in this price range for vintage mid 60's Jazzmaster vibe..
