The Sonor Newport Series (specifically the JF-SSE-11-NEWPORT) was a highly exclusive, special-edition shell pack released in 2011. It was built in Germany as a limited run, with only 50 kits ever produced worldwide, making it a massive collector's item in the drumming community.
The standard shell pack sizes and specifications for this rare kit are outlined below:
Basic Shell Pack Sizes
The Newport series was primarily configured as a 4-piece shell pack featuring the following traditional punchy, modern sizes:
• Bass Drum: \bm{22" \times 18"}
• Rack Tom 1: \bm{10" \times 8"}
• Rack Tom 2: \bm{12" \times 9"}
• Floor Tom: \bm{16" \times 14"} (includes floor tom legs)
Key Technical Details & Features
• Shell Material & Construction: The drums are made of premium Heavy German Beechwood. They utilize Sonor’s C.L.T.F. (Cross-Laminated Tension-Free) process, meaning the wood plies are laminated at a 90-degree angle for maximum roundness, strength, and structural stability.
• Aesthetic Finish: The kit features a striking, high-end outer veneer of Matte Walnut (Non-Glossy).
• OSM (Optimum Shell Measurement): Sonor engineered the shells with a slightly undersized outer diameter. This design aspect allows the drum head to float freely, providing better contact with the bearing edge and maximizing the deep, warm low-end tone inherent to beech.
• T.A.R. Mounting System: Equipped with Sonor's proprietary Total Acoustic Resonance system for the rack toms. It minimizes vibration dampening, allows the shells to flex naturally when struck, and provides a wide, accommodating tuning range.
• Sound Profile: Known for having an incredibly focused sound with controlled decay, solid projection, and a naturally warm, punchy character that excels both in the studio and live settings.
Because it was exclusively sold through "Sonor Certified Plus" dealers back in 2011, finding one on the used market today is rare, with well-kept kits fetching upwards of several thousand dollars
