The late 1920s represents one of the most magical eras in C.F. Martin history. This 1929 Martin 0-18 is a spectacular, lightweight 12-fret powerhouse from the absolute pinnacle of acoustic guitar design. Built just before Martin transitioned to 14-fret necks and heavier bracing, this guitar is a masterclass in responsiveness, offering a warm, open, and hauntingly beautiful voice.

Even with completely dead strings on it right now, this 0-18 sounds absolutely incredible. It is a fantastic opportunity for a player, collector, or luthier looking for a legendary 12-fret Martin that just needs a little bit of love and structural work to reach its full potential.

Structural Details & Project Notes

We believe in absolute transparency, especially with player-grade instruments from this historic era. Here is what you need to know about its current condition:

  • Top Cracks: The spruce top has two cracks, which are clearly detailed in our photos. They will need standard, routine cleating to ensure long-term stability.
  • The Bridge: There is a historic crack running across the original ebony bridge that will eventually need to be addressed or replaced during the top repair work.
  • The Pickguard & Shadow: Somewhere along its 90-plus-year journey, a previous owner added a non-original pickguard. It has since been removed and is currently unattached, but it is included in the sale. You can choose to reglue it to easily hide the cosmetic "tan line" shadow left behind on the top finish, or simply leave it off to show the honest history of the wood.
  • Case: This guitar includes its original hardshell case. While the case is in poor condition from protecting the guitar for nearly a century, it is a wonderful piece of historical provenance to keep with the instrument.

Frets, Setup & Playability

Despite the work needed on the body, the structural bones of this neck are in impressive shape. The guitar actually plays nicely right now with good, medium action.

  • Saddle: The saddle is currently sitting fairly low, so there isn’t much room left for future downward adjustment without standard neck maintenance down the road.
  • Bar Frets: It retains its original, historic bar frets, which show some typical playing wear in the "cowboy chord" area (the first few frets). However, they still have life left in them and the guitar notes cleanly.

This is a rare, exceptionally rewarding project piece. If you want to invest a little bit of bench time into a pre-Depression era 12-fret Martin, you will end up with a world-class, heirloom-quality instrument that sounds like nothing else on earth.
