Up for sale is a vintage 1966 Ludwig Super Classic drum kit. Originally finished in Silver Sparkle, decades of natural aging and UV/sun exposure have transformed the wrap into a more yellowish tint that some collectors consider “ginger ail” tint.

The shells are in good overall condition for their age and show honest signs of use and wear accumulated over nearly 60 years. The bass drum hoops could use a little TLC and display the typical pedal rash, scuffs, and aging you would expect from a well-loved vintage kit. The kit does have the “baseball bat” muffling system, and all pads and mechanisms work. The only thing missing from the kit is the cymbal arm to the base drum and the clump from the base drum to the rack tom.

Having previously worked for WFLIII in Lenexa, Kansas building handmade drums, I completely disassembled this kit for a thorough cleaning and restoration. Every lug, spring, tension rod, and major hardware component was removed, cleaned, and inspected. All chrome hardware was carefully buffed and polished. Some lugs still exhibit minor nicks and pitting consistent with their age, but the chrome presents beautifully and has an impressive shine. There is no cracking in the wrap anywhere in the drums.

The drums are structurally sound and ready to be played, recorded, or added to a vintage collection.

This is a fantastic opportunity to own an authentic mid-’60s Ludwig kit with a naturally aged finish that simply cannot be replicated.
