Condition: excellent, all original except for a replaced pickguard. Recent fret work, nut, and custom pickguard by Gruhn Guitars. Light tarnish on the edges of the pickup covers.

CRAIG'S POV:
Every once in a while, a guitar walks in the door that stops you in your tracks. This 1975 Gibson L5 CES is that guitar.

What makes it genuinely special isn't just what it is, but what it comes with: the original hang tag, the original hardshell case, and the original brown Gibson canvas cover. One owner. Nearly 50 years. This guitar has been cared for by someone who clearly understood what they had. Guitars with this level of documented, unbroken history are rare in any era.

The L5 CES needs no introduction to anyone serious about archtop guitars. It's one of Gibson's crown jewels, the instrument that defined a generation of jazz players. Wes Montgomery's name is never far from a conversation about this model, and rightly so. The 17" carved spruce top over figured maple back and sides delivers that round, full, authoritative voice that players have chased for decades. Blonde examples like this one have always carried a particular visual elegance, and this guitar wears it beautifully.

The back shows the tight, silky maple figure typical of Gibson archtops from this period, with a flame maple neck that suits the blonde finish nicely.

Condition-wise, this is about as clean as you'll find in a 50-year-old fully hollow archtop. Nearly all original throughout. There is some light tarnish on the edges of the pickup covers, entirely normal for gold hardware of this age. The pickguard has been replaced with a custom tortoise guard made by Gruhn Guitars, fitted correctly and looking right at home.

Speaking of Gruhn, their fingerprints are on this guitar in the best possible way. In addition to the pickguard, they performed a recent refret and cut a new nut. If you know vintage guitars, you know Gruhn. Having their hands on this instrument is the best possible endorsement of its current playability. The work has been done, done right, and this L5 is ready to go.

Plug it in, and it delivers exactly what the model promises: warm, woody, articulate, and responsive. The gold-covered humbuckers are period-correct and have that characterful voice the 1970s L5 is known for. There's real depth here, with clarity across the full range and the resonance that only a fully hollow carved-top instrument can produce.

One owner, original everything that matters, serviced by the best. This L5 is ready for its next chapter.
