Catalinbread Semaphore Tremolo – the little wobbly goblin for your pedalboard 🚦🎸🌊
Here comes the Catalinbread Semaphore: a tremolo pedal for people who think a guitar tone shouldn’t just march straight ahead like a well-behaved tax inspector, but should rather stagger, pulse, flicker, pump and occasionally disappear into the woods with a torch. 🕯️👣
The Semaphore isn’t a boring “bit loud-bit quiet” pedal. It can range from warm vintage amp tremolo to hard-chopped stuttering veg, from surf wobble to space pulse, from “gentle shimmer” to “my signal is being controlled by a nervous lighthouse”. Catalinbread describes the Semaphore series as a tremolo with a classic character, but also with modern, more aggressive chop and pulse sounds.
What does this thing do?
🎛️ Rate
Controls the speed. From a gentle wobble to “a tiny helicopter in the guitar cable”.
🌊 Depth
Determines how strongly the effect affects the signal. Gentle breathing? No problem. Brutal on-off-on-off like a faulty neon sign outside a ghost bar? Also possible.
🔊 Volume
Handy, because tremolo otherwise tends to steal perceived volume. Here you can bring the signal back to the front or even boost it slightly.
🔺 Shape / Waveform play
Depending on the version, the Semaphore offers various waveforms or shape options: smooth sine/triangle-like movements, more angular square chops, ramps, pulses and other rhythmic oddities.
Applications, both serious and completely absurd:
🏄 Surf guitar with sunglasses
Clean amp, spring reverb, Semaphore on top – and suddenly the rehearsal room smells of the beach, even though outside there’s probably drizzle and the reality of a car park.
🌙 Spaghetti Western at midnight
Slow tremolo, a bit of reverb, single notes: instantly sounds like a dusty road, an empty saloon and someone staring dramatically at a door.
🫀 Always-on pulse generator
Set very subtly, the pedal gives your sound movement without anyone immediately shouting: “Aha, tremolo!” It’s more like a musical heartbeat under the carpet.
🚨 Stuttering Riffs for the Nervous
Depth up, Rate faster, jagged waveform: and suddenly a normal chord turns into a rhythmically chopped-up flashing light. Perfect for indie, post-punk, noise, math-rock and anyone who likes to build guitar parts that sound a bit like Morse code with an amp.
🛸 Ambient Wave Machine
Placed before delay and reverb, it becomes a floating pulse that slowly pushes chords through the room. Not just sound – more like an aquarium for sad astronauts.
🥁 Pseudo-sequencer trick
With hard tremolo settings, you can rhythmically break down sustained chords, almost like a primitive step sequencer. Very handy when you’re on your own, but your pedalboard secretly wants to be a drum machine.
🧟 Fuzz + Tremolo = Power cut in the swamp
Fuzz first, Semaphore next: crumbly, pumping, broken riffs that sound like an amp playing a supporting role in a horror film.
