Martin 00-18G Classical Guitar, c. 1961–1962 / Serial Number: 179342
A lightweight, responsive vintage Martin built for nylon strings, with the kind of character that only comes from decades of use.
The 00-18G sits in a unique place in Martin’s history. Built during the transition from gut to nylon strings, it blends traditional classical design with Martin’s familiar craftsmanship. The comfortable 00 size body makes it easy to hold, and the all-solid wood construction delivers a warm, balanced voice that responds well to a light touch.
This is the kind of guitar that feels alive in your hands.
Condition and PlayabilityThis guitar shows expected age-related wear for an early 1960s instrument, including pronounced finish checking across the top, giving it a well-played vintage look.
There is a slight depression in the top near the bridge area (see photo with straightedge), measuring less than 1/8", which contributes to the current action. The saddle has been lowered previously.
Current action measures approximately:
- 3.5 mm on the bass side
-
3.25 mm on the treble side
(measured at the 12th fret)
The guitar remains a good, responsive player as-is. There appears to be a small amount of saddle height remaining for minor adjustment, but no further significant lowering is recommended in order to maintain proper break angle and tone.
The instrument feels stable, and no immediate repairs are required. As with many vintage guitars, future setup adjustments can be made to suit the next player’s preference.
What to Expect- Warm, balanced tone with strong fundamentals
- Lightweight, comfortable 00 size body
- A seasoned feel that responds well to fingerstyle playing
- A true vintage instrument with visible age and character
This is not a modern, factory-perfect classical. It’s a real early 60s Martin that has settled in over time and continues to be a rewarding instrument to play.
