A WFL snare drum refers to historic drums manufactured by William F. Ludwig Sr. between 1937 and 1955. After temporarily leaving his family's original company, he founded WFL, which later evolved into the modern Ludwig Drum Company we know today. Vintage WFL snares are highly prized for their warm, woody tones and exceptional craftsmanship. When William F. Ludwig sold his name to C.G. Conn, he launched WFL (his initials) to continue building drums under his own exacting standards. Models from this era—such as the classic Paramount, Buddy Rich, and Symphonic lines—became staples of the swing, bebop, and orchestral eras. Today, modern iterations are also being crafted by WFL III Drums, continuing the family legacy.
What Makes Them Unique
- 3-Ply Shells: Classic vintage WFL snares predominantly feature a 3-ply mahogany/poplar/maple layup with maple reinforcement rings, giving them an incredibly warm, resonant sound.
- Hardware: They are famous for their unique "Zephyr" lugs and nickel-over-brass hoops, which mellow out the attack.
- Playability: Due to their construction, WFL drums offer a highly nuanced, "fat yet crispy" tone that sits beautifully in a jazz or studio mix
