The Gretsch name is synonymous with hollow-body electric guitars, and they’ve been a mainstay for jazz, pop, and rockabilly since the ’50s. This Gretsch G5428TG is a true hollow-body, with laminated Maple construction, top reinforcing braces, and a pair of support posts. The Gretsch “U” neck profile feels very approachable, even with its .860" depth at the first fret being a little deeper than your typical Fender, and the 24.6" scale gives it a comfortable, easy feel. In fact, we prefer 11s on our own Gretsch for a nice mix of snap and easy playability.

What really makes most Gretsch guitars special, though, are the FilterTron pickups. The lower inductance and tighter coil spacing of the FilterTron humbucking design give you the kind of clarity and note separation most humbuckers just don’t have. They’re not high-output pickups, but their snappy, articulate voice makes them great for roots, country, and rockabilly. We also love them with a good gain pedal, where they open up into a really satisfying crunch with plenty of high-end detail. They’re the kind of humbucker a single-coil player can actually fall for. And while some players get spooked by a Bigsby, they don’t float, they’re essentially locked when you’re not using them, and they’ll stay in tune even if a string breaks.

If you don’t already have a FilterTron guitar in your lineup, this Gretsch 5428 is a classic example that plays well, sounds great, and has the unmistakable Gretsch look. It’s a lot of history and functionality for not a lot of money.

Excellent condition guitar with no dents, dings, scratches or fret wear. Currently strung with flat wound strings. Includes pro setup, and inspection checklist.
