Gibson 70’s Explorer Ebony - Adam Jones Relic Custom

This is a 2022 Gibson 70’s Explorer in Ebony that’s a Gibson Exclusive model, and has been customized to sound like Adam Jones’s Gibson Les Paul Custom.  We’re huge Tool fans and we wanted to see what it would sound like if Adam Jones played a Gibson Explorer.  Being that Adam Jones’s go to guitar is a ‘79 Gibson Les Paul Custom, we figured that a Ebony Gibson 70’s Explorer would be the perfect fit, because Silverburst Explorer’s didn’t exist in the 70’s.  Adam Jones also prefers heavy guitars and this one fits the bill because it weighs in at approximately 9 pounds on the nose.  This Explorer has been customized and relic’d to give you an amazing looking guitar that has the high gain sound that Adam Jones is known for..

It features an Aged Nickel Gibson Custombucker that’s unpotted and installed backwards in the neck position and a Seymour Duncan Custom Shop DDJ SH-6 Distortion in the bridge position.  This Gibson Explorer was customized to have all the bells and whistles that you would expect with a Custom Shop quality guitar, and it’s been fully shielded with conductive shielding paint, copper shielding tape, and wired with vintage style Gavitt shielded wire.  We also used DiMarzio Custom Taper volume pots, Switchcraft input jack and selector switch, and paired them with a CTS 450G tone pot with a .047uf/MF Orange Drop Capacitor.  This combination of pickups and electronics is the same setup that is used in his Gibson Les Paul Custom.

For the all hardware we wanted everything that was originally chrome to be in an Aged Nickel finish, so we got a relic’d Gibson Aluminum ABR-1 non-wire bridge, with a aged nickel plated aluminum stop bar tailpiece from Vintage Voltage Guitars; and then we finished it off by aging the rest of the hardware and this Explorer also features: Grover Mini Rotomatic tuners in aged nickel finish, solid brass aged nickel plated jack plate, aged nickel plated stainless steel screws; and aged nickel Dunlop StrapLok system, so this sweet axe doesn’t end up on the floor.

What’s great is these guitars are PLEK’d at the Gibson factory, but still need a full setup and some fine tune adjustments.  We did a full setup with a brand new set of D’Addario 10-52 strings.  It’s got a really fast playing Slim Taper neck profile and rosewood fretboard with white binding. We bought this Explorer brand new and we’ve relic’d it so the overall condition is similar to a Light Aged Relic that the Gibson Custom Shop Murphy Lab does, and it has some marks/scratches in various spots and due to it being a black guitar some of them are hard to see in the pictures (See Photos).  It comes with the original birth picture, warranty card, owners manual, and Gibson USA Case with keys.
